First, my goal for this show was to not spend a dime making anything so everything is upcycled from Daylon from teesdontgrowontrees
I sourced a coral-colored polo which I cropped. The shape of the crop reflects my abstract style so I cut it in a curved shape. For the sleeves I wanted them to be fully detachable at the shoulders and down the forearms. I did this using zippers. I wanted the customer/model to be able to use the sleeves as a throw or if they wanted to wear it sleeveless they had that option as well. To bring out the detail and vibrancy of the sleeve I added rhinestones all over it and covered it with crochet. The crochet will keep in the warmth and add a blanket-type of look when both sleeves are attached together. I make a zippered chest pocket on the front to add a functional enhancement to the design. The sleeves can be worn in multiple fashions even around the neck to signify something of a tulip.
For the bottom, I wanted to create a skirt for the first time. I wanted it to be vibrant and bold. I made a three-layered skirt the top layer, from a pair of jeans, the middle, from a nightgown, bottom, lace fabric. I wanted it to have a bold fit hence it being a mini skirt with lace and also abstract the asymmetrical layering of the skirt
The top was created from different pairs of black jeans. The inspiration of this piece was a symbol of my life growing up in my “hood.” Often times in the school bathroom, on the street corner, in the alleyway, or at a casual kickback the dice tumblers will be playing a game of Cee-lo, which is a dice game where you have 3 dice The players take turns rolling three dice. The bankrolls first. If she rolls a “4,5,6”, or three of the same numbers, “Trips”, then she automatically wins each of the player bets. If she rolls a “1,2,3”, then she loses, and each player wins their bet. If you roll two of the same consecutive numbers then the other dice is your number that the other player has to beat. Growing up watching and playing this game caused a lot of beef and turmoil but always caused a lot of happy faces that won because they had “the hot hand.” I’ve seen guns pulled and fist close to being thrown, but throughout the game, there was an aspect of life, my life. “Life has its risks... Either you strike...Or you take the L...The L is a learning moment. It only matters how you respond. The L is a catalyst for...a new development of...growth. The striker goes through life risking his hand every chance to get closer to his 4-5-6. The 1-2-3 is a test. A test of perseverance...a test of discipline. The striker begins by dreaming...Dreaming of an infinite star that’s a billion light years away...but attainable through faith...and work. The striker does not what gives him instant gratification...he does rather provide future abundance. THE HOOD STRIKER.”
This piece features a denim box cropped football jersey fit with 3 zippered pockets on the from with 4-5-6 on them. The back has “STRIKER” with the numbers 4-5-6.
Bottom: This features baggy blue camo pants. I made the bottom detachable so the model/customer could wear as oversized Jorts or pants. The bottom left detachment features a zipper at the bottom with a strap and parachute buckle that allows the model/customer to take off and whereas a bag. The other leg has abstract shapes on the front and on the back of the leg has a zippered pocket with a button loop that can be attached to the double waist of the pants. The pants are double-waisted with a round zipper pocket and an accordion pocket on the other leg. The purple camo is from a work coat.
My style is eccentric, abstract, based on feelings and emotion. My style always changes.
