Jaylin Marie Aviles is from Brooklyn, NY and is majoring in Business Administration & Marketing.
My goal for this show was to create a collection that I could be truly proud of—something complex, intricate, beautiful, and fun. I wanted to reflect the essence of VDR, capturing its dynamic and multifaceted nature in each piece.
My design style is a combination of raw, reclaimed elements with intricate details, where everyday materials are transformed into something new and elevated. I mix texture, craftsmanship, and bold contrasts to create pieces that are both unique and meaningful—combining the gritty with the glamorous to tell a story of reinvention.
This two-piece set mixes street style with a nod to the Rosa of Guadalupe. The jacket has a tapestry of Rosa sewn on the back, with hand-stitched mixed metal crosses on the sleeves. The custom patchwork jeans feature the bottom half of the tapestry and distressed legs with cut-out crosses from the same tapestry, reflecting transformation and reconstruction.
My second look combines raw, unexpected materials to create something fresh and unique. The top is made of a mixture of beaded strings, crystals, and gold chain, giving it a sparkling yet rugged look. The skirt was made from a collection of thrifted ties, sewn together for a cool, textured look with a denim waistband for a bit of structure. The beaded belt ties everything together, adding a touch of shine to balance out the more raw elements of the design. It’s about taking what’s old and giving it a new life.
