Jasmin Perryman is class of 27 and a Fashion Merchandising and Design major.
The red outfit is Jasmine‘s personal favorite from the things she has created for this fashion show. She tends to mix high and fashion with streetwear and this is a perfect representation of that. Since the shirt is see-through, Jasmine had the intention of using tulle but when she was shopping for fabric, she decided to go with organza, because that fabric was much nicer and it had a certain shimmer to it. Believe it or not, Jasmine had the guidance of youtube when she was making the shirt of the outfit. Since she is not an experienced seamstress yet, this is the first time she has done anything this complex. She googled how to make a basic button down and she made sure she followed the instructions to the T. She thought this was the hardest part, but the actual hard part came later when figuring out how to execute the presentation of the trains. It was very frustrating because at first it just looked like she had placed pieces of fabric at the bottom of the shirt. It looked very unintentional. At one point it looked like she would have to scrap the draping idea of the trains and just have trains hanging from the shirt. It took her a lot of playing around with the fabric to get it right. Since this was supposed to be a piece of that transformed it was also difficult trying to find out the most easy way for her model to release the trains. This might’ve been the most stressful part of this process. As for the styling, Jasmine wanted to do something that would be unexpected while still being well put together. The piece that ties it all together in her opinion was the organza durag which was thought of well after the entire piece was made.
The all denim outfit was one of Jasmine’s first designs, for this fashion show. Originally, the top was supposed to be a regular hoodie with a veil on it but she decided to make a backless denim top with men’s jeans she thrifted. To make the top cohesive with the jeans she added ribbon that she made from organza for a corset finish on the back and for a laced sleeve as well. As for the jeans, the organza on top of the jeans was inspired by an old sketch of a skirt she had done months before even knowing about the show. Both sketches were inspired by curtain drapes; specifically the little curtain pieces at the top that are U-Shaped and then fall at the sides. Jasmine thought this would look cool on top of jeans and give a more streetwear feel. She did not like the original version of this design. She described it as being “ bulky and ugly.” She then took everything off of the jeans and started all over. With the help of her friend, she made a better version by putting the jeans on her friend as she pinned the organza onto the jeans. Very awkward and intimate experience as she described it , but she did what needed to be done. Like the other design, the material was supposed to be tulle but the organza was just much nicer. As far as the vail, Jasmine loves vails she knew for a fact that she wanted to include a vail because she believes that it should be incorporated into everyday fashion more.
Jasmine’s go to design style is extravagant and unexpected which is why it’s hard for her to gain inspiration. The inspiration has to find her. Sometimes Jasmine will be looking at something that sparks an idea of a design that is completely unrelated to what she just saw. Other times Jasmine will be daydreaming and she’ll think “What would happen if I tried doing this?” Jasmine also says that a lot of her designs are just regular pieces with her personal twist to it.
This is Jasmine’s first fashion show as a designer but not her last. Along with designing clothes, she is also interested in creative directing. You will find more of her work on Instagram @manitsperry
