About the Design

Plaid reconstructed skirt: Flannel is one of my favorite materials to wear and style on myself. So naturally I thought a slit flannel skirt would embody streetwear. I took about 6/7 different flannel shirts and started to cut and sew them in a design layout I liked. I knew this look would be perfect for my model given her aesthetic.

Zipper side hem denim: I’ve honestly had these grommet jeans for a while and have always wanted to repurpose them. I thought a zipper side hem reveal would be a dope look for the theme of the show being bloom. I unstitched the side hems, added zippers and pink flowy fabric that would act as a train as my model walked for an angelic look.

Pink frozen shirt corset: Using leftover fabric from the jeans, I decided to make an epoxy resin corset top that would form fit to my model. I wrapped her in plastic wrap and solidified the mold with tape. I was left with a perfect corset casting that I then stuffed for shape. I took my fabric and coated it completely in resin. I was then able to lay the coated material on my mold, and manipulate the fabric into whatever shape I wanted. The corset was fully hardened after 48 hours and I was then able to poke holes on the sides for my ribbon ties for security.

Design Inspiration

I draw my inspiration from popular streetwear trends on Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest and then I add my own creative flair. I would say that street style over the years has been so heavily influenced by black culture and trends with little to no acknowledgment. I draw a lot of my personal style from early 90s/2000s artists who weren’t afraid to be different like Foxy, Lil Kim, Aaliyah. I would describe my personal style as eccentric but practical and comfortable. Although I styled for my models individually, I could see myself in any of the pieces that they were wearing. I always considered myself a stylist but after branching out this year with VDR, I feel like a real designer, capable of challenging myself to create pieces I care about.
